  • Service Design co-creating employment opportunities for young people
    Business Challenge

The Rockwool Foundation is a Danish national research organisation who’s work contributes to the improvement of environmental conditions and development in the Danish society. Rockwool came to CIID Consulting to explore new ways to designing a service increasing possibilities and opportunities for vulnerable youth in the Danish labour market.

    Approach

CIID Consulting collaborated with social innovation specialist Jennie Winhall to conduct qualitative research with young people who are encountering difficulties when seeking education and/or work. Through the research, CIID evolved an in-depth understanding of what types of issues vulnerable young people are facing and identified the lack of a holistic learning curve throughout the process. Representatives from Rockwool Foundation joined CIID in the field and took part in analytical work leading to a final concept.
CIID developed a workshop format using concept scenarios and extensive tools to co-create with key stakeholders including large corporations, SME’s, young people and psychologists. CIID uncovered the will within SMEs to collaborate locally and help young people aggregate working experiences through a network of different workplaces and opportunities.

The research findings revealed systemic gaps surrounding a vulnerable young person when repeatedly exposed to the job market and educational system and played ground for the final service design, filling out those gaps. CIID communicated all research in the format of in-depth reports including user profiles and journeys, concept ideas and a complete service blueprint enabling the opportunity to elaborate and iterate on the concept in collaboration with the client.

The Rockwool Foundation will explore and iterate on the service in a real-life experience prototype, involving stakeholders from companies and young people in the Roskilde municipality.

The prototype will explore a networking platform that creates hands-on project experiences for young people, enabling them to build a holistic skills journey on their way towards education or work. It is a space where young people and companies meet and join projects based on soft and hard skills, rather than educational qualifications. A support structure has been built into the service to act as tutoring role, addressing young people’s individual needs as they move through the process.

  • Mapping a 360° view into the needs of US diabetes patients to identify new business opportunities
    Business Challenge

Novo Nordisk is a global healthcare company and leader in diabetes care innovation. Headquartered in Denmark, Novo Nordisk works globally with the passion, and aim to help prevent, treat and ultimately cure diabetes. Novo Nordisk came to CIID Consulting to gain a more complete understanding of how diabetes patients in North America cope with the illness, from both a medical and emotional perspective.

    Approach

CIID Consulting addressed this challenge by assembling a 360º view into the world and networks of family, friends, peers and care providers that connect to and support diabetes patients.

During the study, CIID interviewed and mapped the support eco-systems of diabetes patients to create a more holistic view and identify opportunities for Novo Nordisk to add value. One opportunity that CIID uncovered was the mismatch between the assumed and actual activities that a patient’s network of care provides, identifying a gap in the delivery of emotional support.

CIID communicated the research outcomes in a tablet-based application, giving the Novo Nordisk Global Marketing Team the opportunity to self-navigate the content whenever free time permitted. The insights and opportunities derived from the research were visually communicated through video, narrated slide shows, audio podcasts and dynamic graphic visualisations that were housed in the app.

The tablet-based application provided Novo Nordisk with a tool to distribute rich media content throughout the company and create a common understanding of how patients live with the disease. It also provides Novo Nordisk and their employees with a knowledge platform to amplify their role beyond the medical aspect of diabetes care.

  • Constructing a prototyping platform to explore new HMI experiences
    Business Challenge

CIID Consulting collaborated with Toyota’s Kansei Design Team to design and implement a prototyping platform. The platforms goal was to be used as a tool to test new in-car experiences within Toyota Motor Europe and Japan.

    Approach

Working closely with Toyota, CIID generated and selected key concepts to develop through creative ideation processes. CIID developed use case scenarios and used iterative digital and physical prototyping to refine selected solutions.

CIID Consulting delivered a unified cockpit experience that included different hardware components that communicated wirelessly among each other. The platform contained a transportable steering wheel and wireless smart devices: easy to assemble and ready to go.

In addition to the the hardware platform, CIID Consulting created 4 different experience prototypes that showcased the possible use cases offered by the prototyping platform.

  • Visualising real-time operations data to support ‘on time delivery’ strategies
    Business Challenge

‘On Time Delivery’ is the primary mission and key success metric for Maersk Line, the World’s largest container shipping company. Maersk wanted to reinvigorate its work force and raise awareness about the importance of on-time delivery by improving knowledge sharing and data transparency in the workplace.

    Approach

Interviews were conducted with Maersk employees, suppliers and customers to understand behaviours and attitudes related to on time delivery and reliability. In order to get a 360 view CIID Consulting undertook field research worldwide in India, Tawain, Dubai, Italy, Rotterdam, Denmark, China and the US.

The research uncovered the need for employees to be able to curate and customise on-demand data streams relevant to their individual roles at Maersk. CIID and Maersk Line worked together to develop an implementable dashboard displaying real time delivery data and other key metrics about its international fleet.

In order to validate the solutions further research was facilitated in Shanghai, Panama and Rotterdam (3 of Maersk’s biggest shipping hubs) with Maersk employees. By gathering genuine user feedback at multiple points in the process, CIID Consulting was ultimately able to accelerate the design and development of the solutions.

CIID Consulting developed a range of solutions that spanned across different implementation time frames. Some ideas purely served as inspiration on the topic of ‘On Time Delivery’ and others were implemented immediately. The real-time data visualisation dashboard that CIID Consulting developed is now actively used in the operations room at Maersk Line in Copenhagen. It displays real time data about the progress of the Maersk Line fleet enabling operations employees and executives to monitor the International fleets.

  • Designing and prototyping a peer-to-peer networking platform for diabetes patients
    Business Challenge

Novo Nordisk is a global healthcare company working and leader in diabetes care innovation. Headquartered in Denmark, Novo Nordisk works globally with the passion, and aim to help prevent, treat and ultimately cure diabetes. Novo Nordisk posed the challenge of looking at how they might provide more emotional support to type-2 diabetes patients to help them cope with the challenges of everyday care.

    Approach

CIID Consulting partnered with Novo Nordisk’s Global Marketing team to design and develop a new service offering that pairs online and offline support for people with type-2 diabetes.

The service solution elevates the emotional well being of people with type-2 diabetes by facilitating peer-to-peer support and providing practical tools for coping with the complexity of a changing lifestyle.

Additionally, the service helps participants create individualised “Care Maps” of local community services and activities, creating a ubiquitous layer of support throughout a patient’s everyday routines.

Following a detailed design phase of the service platform CIID Consulting worked collaboratively with Novo Nordisk to develop a business strategy to ensure the service was sustainable and would provide value to patients and its service delivery partners.

The team designed the service business model, defined a launch plan and developed a communication strategy for Novo Nordisk to share the new initiative internally.

The outcome not only won support from our client’s executive sponsors, but was awarded a Core77 award and was presented at the MedicineX conference at Stanford University.

2. A good prototype is better than a dozen theories
We put prototypes at the heart of our research process, to learn how people really react – not just how they say they will

Our approach to research relies on making as much as observing. We believe that constantly prototyping physical and digital experience is a sounder, faster way to get market insights with real impact.

Depending on what needs to be assessed, we create experience prototypes that range from a quick paper mockup of a smartphone app to a polished, high-fidelity replica of a new connected device. When people have the chance to experience an idea first hand in this way, it produces reactions that aren’t just more accurate, but more actionable: our findings help us evolve our prototypes, so discovery and refinement go hand in hand.

Design research at CIID Consulting is a qualitative, in-context, investigative process. By spending longer blocks of time with respondents, we can shadow, interview and observe, letting us capture and interpret a full spectrum of behaviours. We recognise that it’s hard for people to articulate gut reactions – yet these are the feelings that shape user and consumer behaviour. Observing people in their environments, interacting with the right prototypes, gives us a unique window into that world.
